Our primary mission at Cowjoy Farm is to promote closer bonds between cows and people: through education, advocacy and engagement. That is all cattle whether on a homestead, a cow calf operation, a feedlot, a dairy farm or in a sanctuary.
But what are closer bonds and why have them?
At Cowjoy farm we believe that a close bond is one in which both human and cow are
comfortable with each other
able to communicate their wishes,
respect boundaries
look forward to interacting with each other.
We believe that all cows would live happier and more fulfilled lives if those responsible form them had a better understanding of their unique physical characteristics, their history of domestication and their emotional needs. When you have that knowledge it becomes clear what a crucial role human contact plays in making sure that cows live happy, healthy and productive lives.
We recognize that developing strong mutually rewarding bonds between cattle and their care givers is often challenging. Both the cattle industry and farm Sanctuaries often have to bring in people with little or no knowledge of cows to deliver their care. Educating them is the first step to improving cattle welfare and human safety.
Education is not enough there are also time and financial constraints. Which is why Cowjoy farm focuses on demonstrating practical suggestions that take limited time and can be achieved with little or no financial outlay.
However, we acknowledge that change is hard. This is why our practice is founded on a strong research base that provides strong evidence for the importance of improving cattle's quality of life. For those working in the cattle industry it is also important or them to realize that stronger bonds create better outcomes both in safety and the product produced. Our research section gives plenty of evidence .
Why have closer bonds?
Close bonds do not necessarily mean close contact. Some cows do enjoy snuggling up to people. Thus the increased growth in cow cuddling.
But it is important to remember that cattle are large animals and capable of kicking, head/butting/charging, stomping, goring, and crushing anyone who is in close proximity. Around 20 people are killed by cattle every year and many more injured.
Write your text here. But this is dependent n the personality of the cow, their previous experience, their current level of stress and the environment in which they are. Just as you would not rush up and hug a random stranger or someone who is angry people should not attempt to hug cows they don't know or who are giving off songs they wish to be alone..
