Can a paraplegic cow have a good quality of life?
Cowjoy farm was inspired by Champion: a paraplegic cow at Safe in Austin rescue ranch. Keeping Champion was controversial, many people felt that it was cruel to let a cow who was unable to walk live. Wheelchairs only work for are young calves. There is nothing currently available to help adult cattle who are unable to walk move independently.
Most paraplegic calves in sanctuaries die after a few months. This was what they expected to happen to Champion . But he didn't die he continued to eat, grow, be cared for by his mother and enjoy the company and affection of humans. He needed a lot of physical care to look after his skin and cleanliness but he seemed to enjoy the attention happily lying on his back to be bathed, tolerating being lifted and moved and gobbling up the food given to him.
Finding people with the skills, motivation and temperament to look after a paraplegic cow isn't easy. Champion needed consistent caregivers who were able to interpret his needs and gain his trust. In August
